Out of the Oven Comes Passion

Now, I’m guessing that a lot of you who don’t know me well may think that writing a blog entry on a health & fitness website about my passion for baking seems crazy or maybe counterintuitive, but I beg to disagree.

I am a massive proponent of living a healthy lifestyle and that includes not only exercise and eating healthy foods, but also includes a variety of other factors such as self-love and compassion, mindfulness, enjoyment of life, finding ones passion, etc.

For me, one of my passions is food, and more specifically baking. I won’t lie - I eat well most of the time. That means that I eat mostly real foods, both plant and animal-based, drink mainly water and do my best to get as many nutrients from those food sources as possible. I also limit the amount of overly processed, unhealthy foods as possible. That being said, I’m not going to lie to you - I like wine, dessert, pasta, bread (basically everything carbs) - A LOT. And they will ALWAYS have a place in my diet. I choose not to eat them in excess, but my Pinot Noir and Ben & Jerry’s is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Baking is part of my passion for food. I’ve always loved to bake - definitely more than cook. When I was in Cirque du Soleil, I would bake ALL the time. I made everything from ice cream, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and everything in between. It was the perfect time to be a baker; I could make something and fulfill my need to bake, then bring the majority of what I made to share with my 70+ friends & castmates without eating the entire thing. After I left and moved to Australia, I baked much less (it’s hard to justify baking cookies and cakes daily when you’re baking just for 2), but I still managed to get my fill of homemade sweet treats.

I feel like that passion has been reignited during this crazy time of social isolation. Since I am presently unable to run my business and train clients, baking has been a perfect way for me to fuel my passion, keep my brain occupied, give me a break from the hours of studying I’m doing every day and keep me somewhat connected to my friends and neighbors (at a distance of 6-feet of course). Almost every week, I’ve made something yummy and new which I’ve shared with friends, or that Adam and I have ended up devouring on our own.

Some of the things I’ve made recently have been:

  • Cinnamon Rolls

  • Bagels

  • Pappardelle Pasta

  • Molten Lava Cakes for 2

  • Snickerdoodles

  • Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Vanilla Cupcakes

They all turned out awesome, but below are the recipes of a few of my favorites:

New York-Style Bagel Recipe from Sophisticated Gourmet https://www.sophisticatedgourmet.com/2009/10/new-york-style-bagel-recipe/

I encourage you to find your passion or hobby that you enjoy to make sure you’re giving time to yourself and staying positive. Please share what’s been motivating and driving you recently! I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing or baking!!!

I hope you have a wonderful day and go do something fun for yourself!

*Disclaimer: I do not bake healthy desserts. I use butter…a lot. I do not substitute ingredients with healthy options, nor am I vegan. This does not mean that you cannot make substitutions, but I am not sure how they will turn out.
