No Gym, No Problem
Ok, ok…I know that we are all getting tired of the world being locked down and not getting to do our favorite things, like dine-in at restaurants, go to wine bars, watch a movie at the cinema, and of course, workout at the gym.
But I’m here to tell you, that not being able to go to the gym is NOT the end of the world! You can still be fit, strong, and reach your goals without a brick and mortar fitness center.
First of all, consider the benefits of working out closer to home:
Convenience - working out at home is far more convenient than going to the gym! You literally can roll out of bed, throw on some workout clothes (optional) and shoes, and get your sweat on. You do not have to waste time driving to the gym, find parking, or wait in line for a treadmill, bathroom, or shower…
Privacy - I know it can be fun and motivating to work out amongst other people and join classes with friends. But it can also be intimidating. Outside of the gym, you can try formats that you haven’t considered before, like Zumba, or HIIT, or maybe even a Couch to 5km running program!
Cost - Gym memberships can be pricey. Add the additional cost of personal training and certain group fitness classes and you’re likely spending hundreds of dollars per month. All of the options listed below can be far more cost-effective than the price of working out at a fitness center.
Now, the question is, what are you going to do to reach your goals? There are many fun options for fitness outside of the gym. Below are just a few ideas that will help you get fit, try something new, and stay motivated:
In-Person Personal Training: For those of you who need someone to help keep you on track and stay motivated, you can have your personal trainer come to you, or go to their home. The trainer will be able to create a personalized program for you to help you reach your goals while not having to leave the comfort of your home (or your trainer’s home). The benefits are the same as working with a professional at a gym - the trainer will provide the equipment and will be able to tailor the program to your specific needs.
Online Fitness Challenges: Another virtual option is to participate in an online fitness
challenge. This is great is you want structure but don’t need as much guidance on a regular basis. There are many different types of programs, such as virtual races, or exercise challenges. You sign up for a particular, pre-planned challenge which will usually provide you with structured workouts over a predetermined amount of time. This often includes support from a fitness professional, either weekly or biweekly who will track your progress, give support, and help keep you on track and motivated. *check out my 90 Days to a New You Challenge on under the “Programs” page on my website: https://www.coastsidehealthandfitness.com/programs
Online Fitness Classes: This type of workout platform has become very popular recently. Companies such as Beachbody on Demand and Peloton offer several varieties of fitness classes to help you get in shape and reach your goals. The great thing about these programs is that they typically offer multiple formats, so if you don’t enjoy one style of class then you can switch it up, and try something else without having to dish out extra money. In addition, you can do these workouts in the comfort of your own home, often without a lot of equipment and on your own time frame. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are new to exercise or have pre-existing injuries, you want to be careful and work within the range of your current fitness level and ability. I personally love Beachbody and recommend it to anyone looking for group fitness classes that they can do on their own! I just finished the program called “6 Weeks of the Work” and absolutely loved it! It was fun, challenging, and a wonderful full-body workout and I definitely saw results at the end!
Nature: One of the easiest ways to get fit is to take your workouts outdoors! Nature is the world’s playground and as long as weather permits you can walk, run, hike, cycle, play with the kids, etc. all outside.
Those are just a few of the many options you have if you can’t go to the gym. Coastside Health and Fitness offers many of the programs listed above such as Personal Training, Online Personal Training, and Online Fitness Challenges.
